Where are we? (April 18, 2012)

Last week’s photo was correctly identified by Jason as the Days Inn on Belleville Street in downtown Victoria…well done Jason!

This week might prove to be a little more difficult. Or maybe it won’t. The reason why I’m not sure is I’m not really sure of the location of this week’s photos. I wasn’t able to find any identifying information with the photos, just when they were taken. I know the general area it is in, and after doing a bit of research, I think I know where the exact location might be, but I’m not 100% sure. So I’m hoping one of our loyal readers will be able to correctly identify this week’s edition of “Where are we?” This first photo was taken in February of 1964, and the second photo was taken in March 1966. Do you know where we are today? (click to enlarge)

Vincent correctly identified this as the current site of the Market on Yates at the intersection of Quadra and Yates in downtown Victoria. Below is the current view of the same corner, courtesy of Google Streetview.

  1. Vincent says:

I believe the Market on Yates Street is now where the British Car Centre/Morrison’s Esso used to be. The Hickman Tye Centre is at what is now 910 View Street

  2. Erin says:

Looks like where Victoria Transmission is now, at Government & Herald?!

  3. Erin says:

Scratch my idea. PP seems to be on to something. The building to the extreme right? Looks like the Japanese Grocer…?

  4. Will says:

    Blanshard at Broughton perhaps?

  5. Will says:

    QV’s?

  6. Will says:

    Scratch QV’s – road doesn’t match.

  7. Jen says:

It is where the Market on Yates is.

The hardware store you can see in the background is listed in the 40s as being at 1211 Quadra street. http://www.vpl.ca/bccd/index.php/browse/title/1947/British_Columbia_and_Yukon_Directory

Sorry for the delay in responding. Vincent got this one correct right off the bat. This is now the site of the Market on Yates at Quadra and Yates in downtown Victoria. In the modern day photo, you can see what used to be the Hickman Tye Centre popping up in the background.

I don’t know about you, but I love seeing photos like these with old advertising…”You know you’re a winner…when you sell a million!”
