Redd’s Roadhouse Pub (Review)

After purchasing a Groupon for $15 for $30 worth of food, we decided to give Redd’s Pub a try for a weekday lunch. Never having been to Redd’s Pub before, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but we were eager for a good pub fare kind of meal.

Located on the second floor of the Comfort Hotel and Conference Centre just off of Blanshard Street near Mayfair Mall, the pub was empty when we arrived around 1.00pm on a Friday afternoon, with only two other tables occupied. We ordered the Peppercorn Gorgonzola Burger ($10.95), a homemade beef patty rolled in crushed peppercorns, topped with Gorgonzola on a kaiser bun with lettuce, tomato, and Dijon mayo, and the Steak Sandwich ($14.95), a 6oz sirloin steak with mushroom demi-glaze served on garlic toast with fries and onion rings.

The burger was tasty, although the Gorgonzola was a little overpowering. Some of the fries were warm, some were cold, and all were very heavily deep fried – it was almost as if there was a batter on them, similar to onion rings. The onion rings were also mildly warm, but tastier than the fries. Again, my bad luck with steaks continues, as I ordered it medium-well, and again it was served more than well done. The steak itself was also tiny, which in the end was probably a good thing because it wasn’t as dry and chewy as it could have been had it been bigger.

My wife didn’t finish the burger and some of her fries, and asked for it to be wrapped to take home. Even though this was done before we paid, it didn’t come back to our table and we never saw the food again. The service was minimal, and I had to actually get up and go and look for another ketchup bottle because we were given an empty one.

Even though the pub was almost empty, the food took over 40 minutes to arrive, which I think is unacceptable, especially given that the area is filled with the working lunch crowd who are on a limited time schedule. Had it not been for the fact that we got the meal for 50% off thanks to the Groupon, we would’ve walked away feeling like we had overpaid for a very sub-par meal. Regardless, we were still very disappointed, and won’t be returning to Redd’s Pub again.
