Located in the new Atrium building, Pig BBQ Joint is a popular lunch destination for the working crowd in the heart of downtown Victoria. In addition to this location, they also have a mobile food truck, the Pig Mobile, which visits different areas of town during the week.
With some free time before an early afternoon meeting, we decided to finally try out Pig for lunch. As you might expect from the name, the menu is not very expansive, focusing on the “get your hands dirty” variety of BBQ food. We went with the Pulled Pork Sandwich ($7.50), Smoked Chicken Sandwich ($7.50), and a side of large fries ($3.50).
Your order is placed at the counter, and you are given a number to wait for your meal. A few minutes after selecting a table, our food was brought out to us.
The sandwich came with a large mound of pulled pork, topped with chopped carrots and red onions, served on a fresh, warm bun. The pork was not overly greasy and dripping like some other pulled pork sandwiches we have tried at other restaurants, but was still juicy, tender, and full of flavor.
The Smoked Chicken was also a very generous serving size, topped with pickles, and a light coating of BBQ sauce. As with the Pulled Pork, it was juicy and tender, and a tasty alternative to pork.
Continuing with a common theme, the large fries was more than enough to share between two people after the large sandwiches. They were crispy and well cooked, with rock salt adding to the flavor.
If you are in downtown around lunch time, or work nearby, Pig BBQ Joint should be on your list of must-try restaurants. Don’t go in expecting anything fancy and fine dining (prepare to get your hands dirty!), and you will no doubt enjoy your meal.
