Kaz Japanese Restaurant (Review)

KAZFor a SINK like myself (single income no kids) it’s all about making money stretch further.  So when a friend of mine asked me to join her for dinner at her absolutely favorite and economical sushi restaurant, I was excited.

Voted the #1 Sushi Restaurant by the Times Colonist, Kaz Japanese Restaurant is located on Wharf Street on the edge of China Town.

Another claim to fame for this local gem is it’s late night hours (Tuesday-Thursday open until 11pm, Friday and Saturday open until midnight) For a weekend evening it was completely empty, we were greeted promptly and chose a seat in the front window.

I really enjoy Japanese food so I had a difficult time picking my meal.  The menu is extensive and the prices very reasonable.  I finally chose miso soup, edamame beans (lightly salted), spicy tuna roll and rice with steak sauce (total $18.98) and I ended up with leftovers to take home for lunch the next day.

My friend ordered a yam tempura roll and gomaae salad (steamed spinach with sesame sauce) for a total of $10.25.

Our food arrived very quickly and had great taste.  The spicy tuna roll was a decent size, rolled tightly and amazing flavor with fresh green onion and diced tuna spiced to perfection.  In fact my only complaint was not directed at the food at all,  as an avid tea drinker I was disappointed that both our initial cups, and the refills we were provided twice during our meals, were all relatively of the same lukewarm temperature.

I will absolutely go back, and next time I’m looking forward to exploring new taste variations.  There’s something for every possible palette.  Definitely worth checking out!  What’s better than a night out for sushi?  They’ll even deliver it to your doorstep (orders over $30 after 5pm).
