Clive’s Classic Lounge, located in the lobby of the Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites, is one of Victoria’s gems. That sentence would usually read as Victoria’s hidden gem, but as it has been voted Victoria’s Best Hotel Bar, Canada’s Best Hotel Bar and one of the top ten in the world, according to Tales of the Cocktail, it is hard to include that adjective when describing Clive’s.
The atmosphere at Clive’s is unlike something you would typically find in Victoria. The decor and furniture are tasteful and modern, with a variety of seating options, from individual chairs in front of a fireplace, to tables with seating for larger groups. The mood is calm and relaxing, making for a great spot to come for a quiet, romantic evening.
Clive’s is best known for its cocktails. Prices are high compared to other bars, but you’re paying for a higher quality of alcohol and bartenders who know how to mix a drink. Our small group had several drinks and everyone was impressed by the quality and large selection.
Clive’s also serves food, and on this night we tried the Crispy Dry Rubbed Pork Ribs ($3) and Artisan Cheese, with 3 cheeses from local merchants Ottavio & Whole Beast ($18).
The pork ribs were delicious, with lots of meat and packed with flavour. The only disappointing part that was it was served with 2 ribs. While it is listed under the “Small Plates” section of the menu, it would be nice to know it comes with only 2 ribs. I think one more rib would be more appropriate for a small plate appetizer such as this.
The Artisan Cheese plate was served with a red pepper jelly and a small bowl of olives. Everything was very fresh, and the combination of either the jelly and or olives perfectly complimented the cheeses.
The rest of the dinner menu offers some enticing sounding dishes, at reasonable prices when considering the quality.
With its atmosphere unmatched in Victoria, very professional service and great food, Clive’s Classic Lounge is easily one of the best lounges in Victoria. We will definitely be back for a quiet, relaxing evening out soon.
