Aura Waterfront Restaurant & Patio is part of the Laurel Point Inn located on the beautiful inner harbour of Victoria. A friend visiting from out of town was staying at the Laurel Point Inn, so we decided to go there for a Sunday morning breakfast.
For our meals, Dayna ordered the Point Breakfast ($15), which includes two free range eggs (scrambled), oven-dried herb tomatoes, a choice of bacon, ham, or sausage, toast, and home fries.
The first thing we noticed when it arrived was the lack of presentation – the toast was nearly falling off the side of the plate, and it was placed right on top of the bacon. This may seem like a minor detail, but it only takes mere seconds, and presentation goes a long way as it is your first impression of the food. The other part that stood out was the small amount of eggs considering you are paying $15 for this dish. The eggs were very runny and undercooked for our tastes.
I ordered the Chorizo Croissant Melt ($13) – local chorizo, scrambled eggs, sautéed spinach and mushrooms, tomato, aged cheddar, and home fries.
As you can see, the croissant was overflowing, with plenty of egg and toppings stuffed inside. These eggs were well cooked and not runny when compared to the Point Breakfast. The home fries were good, but lacked that flavour punch when compared to breakfast potatoes at other restaurants we have tried (like at Vista 18).
When we received our bill, we noticed there was an automatic 18% gratuity that had been added. This was most likely because we were a group of eight, but there was no mention of this, either verbally or on the menu, until we saw it on the bill. I even looked over their website afterwards, and could find no mention of this automatic gratuity, even though they talk about handling large groups in the FAQ Aura Waterfront Restaurant & Patio
