1550′s Pub Style Restaurant review (Saanich)

If you’re looking for one of those neighbourhood style pubs where you’ll feel like you’re at home, 1550′s may be the place for you. With an extensive menu that could satisfy even the pickiest eaters, the fact that this restaurant has been around since 1994 is usually a good sign that they must be doing something right.

We went to 1550′s on a Wednesday night, which is well known as their wings night (and they serve up an extensive list of flavoured chicken wings), but on this night we chose to sample some of their other menu items. I don’t usually order pasta when eating out, but I decided to try something a little different and order the Honey Garlic Pasta ($11.50). The serving size was more than adequate, and was actually left with leftovers for lunch the next day. The sauce was VERY tasty and sweet, something I’m not used to when eating pasta, but was very surprised at how much I liked it. The one down side for me though was the sun dried tomatoes, there were simply too many in the dish for my tastes, but if you love them then this is the dish for you.

The other dish we ordered was the Szechwan Chicken Wrap ($11.75). The giant flour tortilla is stuffed with sautéed chicken, rice, sweet bell peppers and lettuce, covered in szechwan sauce with cashews, and it comes with a choice of fries or a side salad.  The wrap was a perfect combination of sweet meets spicey, and was extremely filling – half of it was brought home and made an excellent late-night snack!

During the warmer summer months, there is also a great patio enjoy your beer and wings on. Probably the only complaint with 1550′s is the lack of parking. They do have parking on site, but the lot is small and tight, especially for larger vehicles. There is a large parking lot across the street, however patrons of 1550′s are not allowed to use it and you will be towed (several signs indicating this).

Worth an honourable mention is the fantastic service.  We have been frequenting 1550′s for many years and the service has been consistently good.  The server we had was very engaging, friendly, and had a great sense of humour which made us feel comfortable and well looked after.  Even more importantly, the food arrived hot and within a reasonable amount of time!

We think this pub serves good quality food in a friendly atmosphere for reasonable prices, and would recommend it to all our readers. Have you been to 1550′s? Did you have a good meal there?
